Voyager Software and System Requirements

Voyager requires the Esri ArcGIS for Desktop™ software platform to index Esri data formats (feature classes, layer files, ArcMap documents, etc.). To install Voyager on a computer, it must meet the following requirements:

Operating System

  • Windows Server 2008/2012 and Windows 7/8/10
  • 64-bit operating systems are strongly recommended
  • Virtual Machines are both supported and often recommended. Virtual Machines let you scale indexing resources (CPU cores) during initial indexing and then throttle them back later, when the system is in maintenance mode
  • Service packs are strongly recommended

Hardware

Hardware requirements vary depending on the quantity and type of content being indexed and the specific configuration of your Voyager installation. We offer Minimum and Recommended configurations:

Minimum Configuration

Note: The minimum configuration should only be used for evaluating Voyager and indexing small content repositories. The recommended configuration is appropriate for production deployments of Voyager.

  • 8 GB RAM
  • 4 CPU Cores
  • 100 GB disk space

Recommended Configuration

  • 32 GB RAM
  • 8 CPU Cores
  • 500 GB disk space

Hardware Configuration Notes

  • A single Voyager instance with 10 Million records requires about 12 GB of RAM and approximately 100 GB in disk storage space.
  • The Voyager index requires at least 5 GB+ of disk space (must be on a very fast disk, such as where the OS is installed)
  • Thumbnails require at least 50 GB+ of disk space (this can be on Network Attached Storage or other ancillary hard drives)
  • The indexing process may require significant amounts of temporary disk  storage. This is highly dependent on the type of content being indexed. For example, indexing LiDAR and TIFF files requires significantly more temp space than indexing ArcGIS services. Temporary storage can be on Network Attached Storage or other ancillary hard drives.

Software

Some proprietary formats require access to licensed versions of third-party software during indexing.

Esri Software Requirements

  • A valid license of any ArcGIS for Desktop™ versions 9.3, 9.3.1, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.5 or 10.5.1
  • Service packs are strongly recommended but not required

The ArcGIS license will only be used during a Voyager process that requires it. For example, while indexing Esri GIS data, a license will be checked out for each discovery thread that is indexing Esri data.  While running Voyager, Esri licenses will also be used when running any Esri-related processing task, for example Clip or Mosaic.

Indexing Without Esri software

If there is no access to Esri software, Voyager is capable of indexing many formats without having to install any Esri product.  Supported formats include, but are not limited to:

  • Shapefile
  • DTED
  • RPF
  • NITF
  • TIFF
  • MrSID
  • JPEG (spatial and geotagged photos)
  • GPS eXchange Format (GPX)
  • PDF - both standard pdf documents and geo-pdf

Microsoft Software Requirements

Microsoft Office 2007 or later is required to generate thumbnail images for Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents (software is not required for indexing).
