Voyager Search 1.9.9 Release Notes

About this Release

We’re excited to announce Voyager 1.9.9. In this release, we’ve added four major new features, made more than 100 small improvements and fixed almost 200 bugs. These changes will be most valuable for the Voyager Search administrator, but they enable improvements that end-users will appreciate, too.

First, we’re making our search engine smarter by adding a Natural Language Processing (NLP) feature to the software. NLP is the science of teaching computers to understand human languages, drawing from Artificial Intelligence and advanced linguistic analysis. By employing NLP in the indexing pipeline, Voyager reduces false positives in our geotagging service and allows Voyager to tell the difference, for example, between “British Petroleum” and “petroleum.” The NLP service can also be run as a pipeline step on any text field you are indexing and it can identify the following:

  • People’s names
  • Nationalities, religions, political groups
  • Facilities, such as buildings, airports, highways, bridges, etc.
  • Companies, agencies, institutions, etc.
  • Place names such as countries, cities, states
  • Geographic locations such as mountain ranges, bodies of water
  • Products such as vehicles, weapons, foods, etc.
  • Events like hurricanes, battles, wars, sports events
  • Artworks like titles of books, songs,
  • Laws
  • Languages

Second, we’re fully cloud-enabled. Voyager can run in Amazon and can index any content stored in S3. It can also deliver that content through our geoprocessing tools. We've used it to index millions of aerial images from NAIP on AWS, which we are making available in our release of VoyagerODNTM, the Voyager Open Data Network, coming in June. If you haven’t migrated fully to the cloud, we can handle that, too. Voyager can run locally, and index content in the cloud and locally or vice versa.

Third, Voyager has a new Snapshot interface for system administrators. Voyager's Snapshot manager helps system administrators to easily migrate and merge large Voyager indexes in support of high availability and disaster recovery deployments. Administrators can create Snapshots with the specific components they need, including Security Settings, Display Templates, Discovery Configuration and Thumbnails, and package them up to be moved to another Voyager instance.Snapshots are not version dependent. For large systems, it is also possible to use the Voyager API to script updates.

Fourth, Voyager software administrators can set up what tools they want to show on search results and detail pages. They can rename them and select the tools that make the most sense to streamline their specific workflows.

Users will appreciate these improvements:

  1. We’ve introduced a new grid view of search results. On hover, users can see the fields selected in a card view. This presentation is particularly nice for imagery heavy solutions.

  2. On the relationships tab of detail pages, we are now showing related content for additional web services, layers and maps.

  3. If administrators have enabled multiple base maps, users can toggle between map types in NavigoTM, which is useful when previewing overlays.

Saved Search and Display Template Changes will help Subject Matter Experts:

  1. Subject matter experts who set up saved searches will love that they can now drag-and-drop to order the saved search list. And they can also set up nested Saved Searches to provide more quick links while keeping users from becoming overwhelmed with lists.

  2. For administrators of saved searches, we have added links that jump users directly into the section of the related display template that they need to edit.
  3. Display templates now have filters to help wade through long lists of fields.
  4. Lists, user-defined collections of items not driven by filters and general query parameters, can now be turned into a Saved Search. Users can gather them in their cart and use the new Create List Saved Search feature, adding that list of items to their Saved Search menu.
  5. A new default Saved Search that shows all federated catalogs.

In addition to the big ticket items already mentioned, administrators will appreciate these small, but important improvements:

  1. Lists of locations can be exported.
  2. Administrators can now watch progress of an indexing location and see the total count as well as the current count of records while a location is indexing.
  3. Administrators can exclude subfolders as they index a specific location.
  4. For customers in more secure environments, Voyager now supports Client Certificate authentication so Administrators can easily configure authentication without third-party components. End users will now be able to use their CAC cards to authenticate with Voyager.
  5. Finally, we’ve added a restart button to Voyager so that administrators can restart the Voyager from the convenience of their browser.

ArcGIS for Desktop Support

Voyager Search requires a valid license of the following ArcGIS for Desktop™ versions: 9.3, 9.3.1, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 or 10.4.1

IMPORTANT NOTE: ArcGIS for Desktop version 10.5 is not currently supported
